Function Report - Taste N Talk Evening
With Phillip Moraghan of Curly Flat
St Michael's Church Hall,
Ashburton
Tuesday,
9 June
2009
The night was
cold & wintery.........the casseroles, rice & vegetables were
very warming & delicious....many thanks to Nola.....then
followed a most comprehensive insight into the Pinot Noir
story.....presented by Phillip Moraghan (owner/winemaker) from
Curly Flat Winery.....who certainly was able to explain to us
that the Pinot Noir was more than just a grape variety.
We were
reminded that "first & foremost wine is just a drink"
Pinot Noir is more about tasting soil than fruit..
Pinot Noir at its best is an "iron fist in a velvet glove"
Pinot Noir's home is in Burgundy East France....
Phillips
presentation included slides photos of his property & all the
machinery/vats/barrels used in the production of his wines & his
detailed information of the processes used. He provided
interesting insight even to those of the Guild who have seen and
heard so much over the years.
Of course the
approx 30 members/friends who attended were able to taste the
results of Phillip's labours from the vineyard situated in fine
volcanic soil near the Macedon Ranges.
Firstly
presented were Chardonnay
2006 Curly Flat...2007 Williams Crossing...& an
interesting 2000 vintage Curly Flat
Next we were
able to chose our favoutite vintage of Pinot Noir from the:
2006 Curly Flat.....2007 Willaims
Crossing....2003 Curly Flat........
Whilst still
discussing the various merits of the wines, the evening came to
a close with Bob thanking Phillip & inviting all to coffee &
cake...another well worthwhile time of learning & fellowship was
enjoyed by all.........
